Electrical Engineering deals with the generation, distribution, and use of electric power. This includes generators, motors, transformers, batteries and renewable energy systems. The electrical industry is one of South Australia’s major employers and one of the State’s growth areas.

The associate degree gives students a firm foundation in both theoretical study and practical skills, with an emphasis on strong site management skills as needed by the construction industry. A typical study program in the first year includes electrical engineering practice, including WHS and sustainability, engineering mathematics and physics, basic analog circuits, introduction to electrical machines, and engineering programming. The second year includes electrical machines, mechatronics, project management and final year engineering project. In your small class, you will work on real-world examples and combined with the guaranteed work experience in the field, you will develop the attributes needed to succeed in Australia’s technology-based industries. The course offers work placement and industry-based final year projects.

Employment Outcomes

Electrical Engineering deals with the generation, distribution, and use of electric power. This includes generators, motors, transformers, batteries and renewable energy systems. The Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering was developed by TAFE SA to respond to the workforce development needs of the electrical industry in South Australia. The electrical industry is one of South Australia’s major employers – and one of the State’s growth areas. The employment opportunities for the graduates of this course are in a range of industries, including electricity generation and distribution, production line processing, mining and other industrial and commercial industries. Your work may involve overseeing the condition of electrical equipment, maintain and commissioning electrical equipment or work alongside engineers to design and prototype advanced electrical technology.

Engineering (Honours) (Electrical and Electronic):

In your studies you will develop advanced practical skills and theoretical understanding of the generation, transmission, distribution and use of electrical energy; and computer networking, communications, control systems, and digital electronics.

You’ll work alongside other engineering students on a major industry project in your final year. You may also be eligible for a full semester industry internship. While you study you'll have access to our state-of-the-art engineering spaces including the Engineering Mechatronics Lab, Experience One Studio, and the Experiential Learning Suite.

What you'll learn:

In your first year you will develop a strong, general foundation in engineering. As your studies progress, you will learn about the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy, and about computer networking, control systems, and digital electronics. In the compulsory 12-week industry placement you’ll get to use the knowledge and skills you’ve learned in a work environment.

At least half of the honours year involves a major project. Armed with new knowledge and skills, using the latest design tools, and mentored by engineering academic staff, our honours students develop innovative products to advance technology. Recently for example, students worked on an instrumented rowing simulator for elite athletes.
