When you study Landscape Architecture at Dalhousie's Agricultural Campus in Truro N.S. you'll learn scientific concepts and horticulture and design principles. Guided by experienced faculty members you'll also learn how to apply these principles to the creation of innovative sustainable residential neighbourhoods parks conservation areas historic sites and more.

Real-world design projects require students to confront current challenges including climate change ecosystem disruption and the need for sustainable human settlements. Project work emphasizes inclusion and the equitable treatment of all people and celebrates human diversity.

What will I learn?

Students learn about ecological processes plants construction and maintenance methods graphic communication and plan making for construction documents and landscape history. In a series of four design studios students apply their learning and develop their ability to shape natural built and cultural places. Courses enable students to understand problems and design solutions that meet high standards for function sustainability aesthetic value and meaning.

Students develop new skills through hands-on learning activities in surveying arboriculture landscape installation and landscape maintenance. You will also develop the ability to create maps models and images used in professional portfolios and presentations. Program courses include:

  • Landscape Plants I & II
  • Nature’s Image: A Survey of Landscape Art
  • Urban Tree Management

Careers and future study:

You'll enter a field where your skills and knowledge are in high demand. The Atlantic Provinces Association of Landscape Architects (APALA) and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) have both identified a growing need for landscape architects technicians and their combined services.

Sample employers include:

  • Parks and recreation departments
  • Consulting firms

Future studies at Dalhousie could include the BEDS/MArch program in the School of Architecture or the MPlan program in the School of Planning.

  • Completion of secondary school (Grade 12)
  • A minimum overall average of 70% in five academic Grade 12 courses
  • A final grade of at least 70% in Grade 12 academic English and any other required subject.

English language requirement:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - 237 (computer-based) 90 (iBT) and no lower than 20 in each band
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - 6.5 overall and no lower than 6.0 in each band
  • Michigan English Test (MELAB) – 55
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - 61 overall and no lower than 50 in each skill
