This program gives you excellent preparation – and extra consideration – if you are planning on entering any of Fanshawe's Human Services career programs like Child and Youth Care, Early Childhood Education, or Recreation and Leisure Services, among others. Program Description

The Human Services Foundation program provides a broad education in understanding human behaviour and serves as a foundation for preparing the student to enter specific people helping career programs. Basic academic coursework relevant to human services and volunteer experience in a human services setting combine to provide a comprehensive introduction to the field of helping.

Other Information

Adult students who have developed emotional maturity and stability through a few years involvement in the working world are encouraged to apply.

Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to

1. Discuss the roles, responsibilities, career opportunities, academic and personal requirements for success in the Community Services and Child Studies field.

2. Apply culturally sensitive communication and interpersonal skills to support team functioning in academic and professional settings with the ability to engage in self-reflection.

3. Explain major theoretical models of behaviour associated with the study of psychology.

4. Apply the appropriate Client service strategies according to client behaviour/preference.

5. Select the Community Services and Child Studies field best suited to personal and career interest.

6. Explain how academic strengths, needs and personal health factors affect success and wellness in a college environment.

7. Utilize written and verbal communication skills specific to the Community Services and Child Studies field.

OSSD with courses from the College (C), University (U), University/College (M), or Open (O) stream OR Academic and Career Entrance Certificate (ACE) OR Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate (GED) OR Mature Applicant with appropriate preparation.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

A Grade 12 College Stream or University Stream English credit from an Ontario Secondary School, or equivalent, depending on the program's Admission Requirements

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test with a minimum score of 550 for the paper-based test (PBT), or 79 for the Internet-based test (iBT), with test results within the last two years

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) test with an overall score of 6.0 with no score less than 5.5 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) test with an overall score of 60 with no score less than 50 in any of the four bands, with test results within the last two years

An English Language Evaluation (ELE) at Fanshawe College with a minimum score of 70% in all sections of the test, with test results within the last two years

Fanshawe College ESL4/GAP5 students: Minimum grade of 80% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 8, 75% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 9, or 70% in ESL4/GAP5 Level 10
