Field Placement

Our program has a field placement component. This partnership with the medical community will provide our students with an exciting opportunity to apply their developing skills in a practical office environment. The field placement allows students to put into practice the curriculum they have learned in the classroom to the workplace setting. This is a great opportunity for our students and partners to work together and learn from each other.

HELP OUR FIELD PLACEMENT PROGRAM GROW

Niagara College’s Office Administration – Health Services program would like the opportunity to partner with you to provide our students with a field placement experience in a medical setting. After one year of administrative training, our students are equipped to work with your medical team to assist with your clerical needs while gaining hands-on specialized training in the field. Students would abide by the rules of your work environment and have fulfilled all of the necessary health requirements to work in a medical environment. There would be no financial cost incurred by your organization.

The student field placement is one day a week and runs concurrently with the second-year academic portion of the program.

WHAT ARE OUR STUDENTS STUDYING?

The students in the Office Administration – Health Services diploma program at Niagara College receive training in general office procedures during their first two terms. In their third term, the curriculum turns to specific ‘medical office’ processes which include; hands-on training with scheduling appointments, maintaining patient records, medical billing and transcription using medical office software simulating an office environment. Applying that in-class training in a workplace adds a dimension to the learning environment that is critical in the development of a valuable employee for you. To that end, in the student’s second year they are expected to complete 188 hours (Tuesday preferred) field placement in a health-care setting. During the field placement students will apply and develop knowledge and skills in an office environment either in the community or hospital setting.

The principle objectives of the field placement are:

  • To give the students an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom in an office environment i.e. community or hospital setting
  • Provide the student an opportunity to learn how the organization functions
  • Allow the student to explore career choices and to allow the employers to assess potential new hires
