Our MA in French Literature, Language & Culture is tailored for different needs and interests. It comes in two formats: a thesis option and a project-based option, which is a fast-track program that can be completed within one year.

Dynamic and designed to foster a close-knit cohort, our MA trains students in a myriad of disciplines, including French, Quebec, French-Canadian, African and Caribbean literatures, culture and theory, cinema, theatre, theoretical and applied linguistics.

Placing a special focus on digital cultures and literacies and innovative teaching methods (blended courses, collaborative workshops, etc.), our MA can lead to a multiplicity of careers.

Research

Faculty members in the Department of French have wide-ranging research and teaching interests in French, Quebec, French-Canadian, African and Caribbean literatures, culture and cinema, as well as in linguistics and applied linguistics.

Students must Meet the minimum admission requirements of the Faculty of Graduate Studies; Have completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related fields from an academic institution recognized by the University of Victoria; Meet the English language requirements; Have a minimum GPA of 7.0/9.0 (A- grade) on UVic?s scale, or 80-84% range. English Language Proficiency requirement: The minimum acceptable TOEFL score for international applicants is an overall score of 90 on the Internet Based TOEFL (IBT), with a minimum score of 20 in each of the listening, speaking, reading and writing sections. The minimum overall IELTS score is band 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each band.

Applicants must have to either the thesis or the project-based program requires a BA degree in French, or equivalent, with a minimum overall average GPA of 6.5 in third- and fourth-year French courses. This qualification should consist of a minimum of 15 units of senior undergraduate course work in French which would normally include a methodology course and an advanced language course (equivalent to FRAN 390 and FRAN 402 at UVic).

English Language requirements:

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) - Require a minimum of 90 with the following minimum section requirements: Listening 20; Speaking 20; Reading 20; Writing 20. The minimum acceptable TOEFL score is 575 on the paper-based test. Individual departments may set a higher standard.
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - A minimum Overall Band Score of 6.5, with no score of less than 6.0 on each individual component on the Academic IELTS is required.
MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) - A score of 90 on the MELAB will be accepted
