DTU is one of the few universities in the world to offer a complete two-year MSc programme in wind energy.

In recent years, wind energy has become an important source of electricity production, and since wind energy contributes to reducing CO2 emissions, this is regarded as a very positive trend. Wind energy is expected to cover 12 per cent of the global power consumption in 2020, with the number of employees in the wind industry reaching two million. In Denmark, wind energy already constitutes more than 30 per cent of the total energy production, but is expected to increase over the next years.

DTU has been involved in research and education since the 1970s, offering an MSc wind energy programme since 2002.

Study programme focus

Lecturers on the Wind Energy programme are elite researchers from DTU specializing in wind energy, as well as experts and engineers from the wind turbine industry. You will gain access to state-of-the-art research and technology as well as extensive knowledge of aerodynamics, aeroelasticity, mechanics, grid connection, and electrical engineering.


You can choose to specialize in electrical or mechanical engineering within one of the five study lines:

  • Mechanics and Aerodynamics
  • Mechanics of Materials and Structures
  • Testing and Measurements
  • Electrical Wind Turbine Systems
  • Electrical Wind Turbine Technology

You should be aware, however, that your choice of courses in your individual study plan offers a high degree of flexibility. Therefore, you have every opportunity to design your own study programme and career by choosing from the wide range of courses offered at DTU.


The MSc in Engineering is designed provide you with the competencies to analyse, design, develop, and operate future wind energy systems.

Typical fields of work

As an MSc graduate in Wind Energy, you can contribute to the development of wind turbines by engaging in the calculation of blades, drivetrains, towers, and foundations as well as design and control of the mechanical and electrical components and systems.

Career opportunities

The MSc programme in Wind Energy qualifies you for employment in a rapidly expanding international industry. Some of our graduates have founds jobs with utility companies, consultants, and developers of large onshore and offshore wind farms. Another possibility is pursuing a career as a researcher employed in the public and private sectors.
