Ne öğreneceğim?

The master's degree is research-oriented and comparable in terms of time and focus to the diploma thesis in the previous diploma in physics. In the course of the master's degree, students should acquire the ability to work independently on scientific questions. This ability is of fundamental importance, both for a later doctorate and for a successful job as a physicist outside of research in later professional life.

What is special about the Tübingen program?

The one-year master’s degree in physics builds on the four-year bachelor’s degree in physics (“consecutive master’s degree”) and can be started in both the summer and winter semesters. Within Germany, only the University of Tübingen offers a one-year master in physics, which usually requires a four-year Bachelor. Bachelor graduates from other universities may have to earn additional credit points in order to be admitted to the master's program.

How is the program structured?

For graduates with a four-year bachelor's degree in physics(or a comparable degree), the one-year master's program consists of the project study for the master's thesis (30 ECTS points) and the master's thesis (30 ECTS points). Both are usually carried out in the working group of the supervising professor. At the beginning of the master’s degree, an application for admission to the master’s examination must be submitted. You can obtain an appropriate form from the Central Examination Office. From the time of admission to the master’s examination, the topic of the master’s thesis must be issued within six weeks. Starting with the issue of the topic of the master's thesis, the master's examination must be completed within 12 months. Prerequisite for the start of the project study is the issue of the topic of the master thesis. The overall grade of the master examination results from the grade of the master thesis.

Career prospects

The professional field for physicists is very broad. Many physicists work in basic research. Of course, this includes the various areas of physics, but also other sciences, such as medicine, chemistry, biology and engineering, in which experimental setups or mathematical modeling are required. In the manufacturing industry (electrical engineering, optics / lasers, mechanical engineering, medical technology, software), physicists work on the development, as well as in the support and training of employees in new technologies. In recent years, more and more physicists have found employment in service industries (management consultancy, bank / stock exchange, insurance). Because of the broad education, the job prospects are generally very good. Physics is aiming for a master's degree.

Giriş koşulları

Amerika gelen öğrenciler için

Students must have a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, they must be fluent in German and solid in English.

Uluslararası öğrenciler için

Prerequisites for studying in the master’s course are a bachelor’s degree in physics or an equivalent degree with at least a grade of 3.3 and proof of minimum knowledge and minimum performance in the following areas:

Achievements in theoretical physics (quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, statistical physics, classical field theory) totaling at least 12 ECTS points and
Services in experimental physics (astronomy and astrophysics, nuclear and particle physics, atomic and molecular physics, condensed matter, nanostructures) totaling at least 18 ECTS points and
Achievements in physical internships totaling at least 9 ECTS points.

The course can be studied in either German or English. There are either German language skills (DSH 2 of the "German language examination for university entrance") or the English language provided (B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). In any case, a good knowledge of the spoken and written English language is essential.
