This two-year, in-depth interdisciplinary program provides students with a detailed understanding of the human past, focusing on a combination of disciplines in the natural sciences. Students specialize in one of six specialized areas in Scientific Archaeology (Geoarchaeology, Archaeometry, Zooarchaeology, Palaeogenetics, Palaeoanthropology and Archaeobotany) and tailor courses and research with top scientists on staff.

Students acquire practical and theoretical knowledge using cutting-edge tools and gain experience in the lab and the field.

How is the program structured?

The two-year M.Sc. course „natural scientific archaeology“ is a research-oriented study program focusing on the broad range of natural scientific applications to answer archaeological and historical questions. In the first semester, students get an overview over the diverse cases of natural scientific archaeology, to then specify in one of these cases afterwards. The study program mediates methods and issues and is not focused on certain regions or periods.

Career prospects

Graduates have the possibility to work for research institution, universities, antiquities and monuments offices, environmental agencies, consultancy firms, disinterment firms, prospection firms. It is also possible to work in scientific journalism or in further professional fields.

Students must have a Bachelor’s degree. In addition, they must be fluent in German and solid in English.

Uluslararası öğrenciler için

A prerequisite for enrollment in this Master’s program is a Bachelor’s degree completed with a grade of 2.5 or better. The Master's program in Archaeological Science may be pursued on the foundations of a prior degree either in cultural archaeology or in science.

For the different specialisation directions different preconditions apply (see examination and study regulations). The institute would like to accept students with a Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology as well as students with a scientific degree (Bachelor of Science) with complementary archaeological competences.

An adequate knowledge of English is also required of students in the M.Sc. in Scientific Archaeology program. An adequate knowledge of English is considered to be level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or equivalent.
