The aim of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine (BChinMed) programme is to nurture a new generation of Chinese Medicine professionals who are well equipped with knowledge in Chinese Medicine and biomedical sciences and are competent in clinical skills and life-long learning skills to provide excellent Chinese Medicine healthcare service to the community to foster the development of Chinese Medicine and integrative medicine in Hong Kong.

What You’ll Study

The 6-year programme covers:

  • Chinese Medicine Foundation Courses
  • Chinese Medicine Classical Texts Courses
  • Chinese Medicine Clinical Courses
  • Biomedical Sciences Courses (including western medicine bedside training)
  • Disciplinary Elective Courses
  • Field Trip and Chinese Medicine Dispensary Practicum
  • Chinese Medicine Clinical Attachments, Junior Clerkship and Clinical Clerkship
  • Common Core Curriculum Courses
  • Language Enhancement Courses

Exciting Opportunities

Experiential learning is encouraged through clinical attachments and more, in which students will have the opportunities to apply the knowledge acquired in practical settings.

Students can widen their horizons and enrich their learning experience through the Chinese Medicine Undergraduate Student Exchange Programme.

They will also be arranged to participate in a field trip, which they can learn more about indigenous traditional Chinese medicine herbs in the natural environment in Mainland China.

Professional Recognition

Graduates of the Bachelor of Chinese Medicine programme are eligible to apply for the Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination in Hong Kong. Those who have passed the Chinese Medicine Practitioners Licensing Examination are qualified for registration as registered Chinese Medicine practitioners with the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong.

Career Prospects

Registered Chinese Medicine practitioners can seek employment in Chinese Medicine clinics in both public and private sectors or to engage in private practice. They are also qualified to take up research and development posts in Chinese Medicine pharmaceutical trading and manufacturing companies, and biotechnology companies, or to work in managerial, marketing, sales, insurance or advertising positions in Chinese Medicine related businesses. Some may opt to pursue postgraduate studies or become academics in tertiary institutes.

Competitive Admission Standards:

  • An International Baccalaureate Diploma with 31 points out of 45 or equivalent
  • GCE A-Level / International A-Level: Candidates should present at minimum of 2A 1B level subjects, excluding English and Chinese language or equivalent
  • SAT Reasoning Test / ACT plus Writing and SAT Subject Test / Advanced Placement Test: Candidates should have completed - Redesigned SAT: 1350; SAT Subject Tests: 550 – 600 in each of the 3 subjects; AP Exams: Level 3 in each of the 3 subjects or equivalent

You must achieve at least one of the following English Language Requirements to be considered for admission to HKU.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

GCSE / GCEO

  • Grade C in English Language at GCSE/GCEO;
  • Grade C in English First Language at IGCSE; or
  • Grade B in English as a Second Language at IGCSE

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English / Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

  • Level C1 or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English; or
  • Grade C or an overall score of 180 in Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English

SAT Reasoning Test: Sub-scores of 550 in both Critical Reading and Writing in the same attempt of the SAT Reasoning Test (prior to March 2016); or Test scores of 31 in Writing and Language and 30 in Reading in the same attempt of the Redesigned SAT Reasoning Test;

IELTS: An overall band of 6.5 in IELTS Academic Module;

TOEFL: A score of 93 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or 583 in the paper-based test.

Additional Requirements / Assessment: Biology, Chemistry or Physics is preferred; and
a good command of written and spoken Chinese (Cantonese and Putonghua).
