WHAT IS BME?

Biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary study in which biomedical and engineering sciences are applied innovatively to solve health and medical problems for the benefit of mankind. There is a growing worldwide recognition that biomedical engineering will have an enormous impact on the upcoming improvement of health services and the emergence of new industries of biomedical-related products. Biomedical engineers will play key roles in designing innovative medical instruments and sensors, deploying the emerging infrastructure for health informatics, creating new biomaterials, and developing new medical biotechnologies.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

Our BEng (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering programme is jointly supported by the CUHK Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine. It is coherently organized under the CUHK Department of Biomedical Engineering to support student learning on campus, in hospital, and with our partners local and overseas.
Our programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and prepares our students well for industrial and academic placements. On the industrial side, since 2012, our graduates have been well received by our medical device industries. On the academic side, around 25% of our graduates pursue further studies in various engineering and medical disciplines (some all the way to PhD).
CUHK BME students will have opportunities to learn on-site how technology can enhance clinical services and patient benefits. Besides having the Prince of Wales Hospital as our teaching hospital, CUHK will also have our own private hospital to be launched in 2019-20.
Our students enjoy support for overseas exchanges, research and industrial internships, and global competitions.
Our top students with interest and track record in research are eligible for potential enrollment in the CUHK MBChB program in an accelerated track.

Career prospects

Our graduates pursue various BME related careers in engineering and product support, marketing and technical sale, laboratory and research, etc. They are hired in private industries including local and international companies, as well as public organizations like hospitals, government departments (e.g. EMSD), and other government-funded institutions. Our graduates are also sought by non-BME related companies, likely due to their interdisciplinary preparation and generic competence. A relative large percentage of our graduates pursue further studies both local and overseas. Most of them go deeper in a specific biomedical engineering area or some other related areas in engineering or science. Some go for other complementary study, including business administration, medicine, and law.

For applicants who have completed only the first year of IB Diploma studies with outstanding results, may be considered admission under special circumstances on individual merits case-by-case. You are eligible to apply for admission if, by 1 September of the year in which admission is sought, you possess any of the following qualifications:

1. GCE-AL/International-AL/IB/Other high school qualifications

GCE-AL/International-AL: 3AL/ 2AL+2AS in one sitting (All grades must be obtained from examinations taken within a twelve-month period.)

International Baccalaureate Diploma

A recognised non-local qualification which qualifies them for admission to a university in the country/region where such qualification is originated (e.g. high school diploma plus SAT/ ACT and SAT Subject Tests/ AP Tests in USA, UEC/ STPM in Malaysia, ATAR in Australia, OSSD/ BC diploma in Canada, GSAT/AST in Taiwan, AISSCE (CBSE)/ ISC in India, SMA in Indonesia, etc.)

2. Post-secondary qualifications

Completed at least one year of undergraduate study at a recognised university
Completed at least one year of study leading to the qualification of associate degree/higher diploma or its equivalent

3. Mature Applicants

Mature persons aged 23 or above on 1 September in the year in which admission is sought, provided they are able to show either by publication or by other acceptable evidence that they have achieved sufficient competence in their chosen field of study to justify admission; or have shown exceptional ability in appropriate academic or professional fields.

Other English language requirements equivalent to HKDSE: Level 3 or HKALE/ HKCEE: E/Level 2.
