Massey’s Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management and Employment Relations) will give you the theoretical, policy and business skills you need to understand, manage and collaborate effectively with people in the workplace.

When you study the BBus (HRMER), you’ll look at how employees are recruited, developed and managed, and how work is designed and measured so that an organisation can create value from, and add value to its employees. You’ll also examine how different interests and power relations inform people-related strategy and practice across different organisational and sector contexts.

Human resource management (HRM) and employment relations (ER) involve various approaches to managing the relationship between people and their organisations. The role of human resources (HR) and employment relations (ER) professionals is to shape and support organisations and their employees at both strategic and operational levels. They ensure that people are managed fairly and effectively within businesses, and other organisations in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

HR and ER specialists help create work environments that are engaging, participatory, rewarding and high-performing. This is vital for any organisation wanting to understand and develop their people so that they both contribute to the organisation and satisfy their own personal and career needs.

What will you study?

In this major, you take courses in human resource management (Principles of HRM; Strategic HRM), ER, organisational behaviour, and cross-cutting courses on important issues (Contemporary HRM and ER; Decent Work; Equity and Diversity in the Workplace).

Gain a sound base in business

The Bachelor of Business will give you the leadership, management, communication and critical thinking skills that will make you a sought-after employee in many different types of organisations in New Zealand and around the world. You will be someone that has a sound base in the business fundamentals of accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, law and communication in addition to specialist HRM and ER expertise.

Wide range of knowledge

You will be able to take advantage of Massey’s expertise in all areas of business, including small business and innovation, human resource management, employment relations, finance, communications and marketing. That means you will graduate with a broad knowledge of general business practice and will be prepared for leadership, management and other roles across business and related stakeholders.

Careers

A major in HRM and ER opens the door to a wide variety of careers. As a new graduate, you may take up a generalist HRM/ER position in a private company or in the public sector. There are specialist HRM and ER opportunities too, in strategy, recruitment; remuneration; training and development; collective bargaining; change management and dispute resolution.

The BBus majoring in Human Resource Management & Employment Relations has a total of 360 credits.

  • Human Resource Management & Employment Relations major totalling 120 credits
  • Elective courses totalling 120 credits

In order to widen your choice of courses, or to fit in with your other commitments, you may opt for a mix of internal and distance courses.

English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0 (no band less than 5.5); TOEFL iBT- 80 overall (min 19 in Writing); PTE Academic - 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills); Cambridge English - 170.

Students must have successful completion of a qualification equivalent to the New Zealand Year 13 - NCEA Level 3 University Entrance. International students need to check the equivalency of their secondary school qualification by reviewing the Academic Admission Requirements by Country.

Those who have completed 3 x B at level 5 or 6 passes in the New Zealand Diploma of Business may apply for entry into a Bachelor's programme. An NZQA transcript as formal evidence of the NZDipBus results is required before credit will be assessed and only papers with a minimum grade of B will be assessed for credit. The English language requirements can be met by: A minimum IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent) used to gain entry to the NZDipBus or, a recent IELTS 6.0 with no band score less than 5.5.

Students from a country where English is not the first language, must obtain a minimum English Language competency level.

  • IELTS score of 6.0 (no band less than 5.5)
  • TOEFL iBT score of 80 overall (min 19 in Writing)
  • PTE Academic score of 50 Overall (min 42 in communicative skills)
  • Cambridge English score of 169 overall and all bands 162 or better
