Develop the knowledge and confidence to work with, care for, and manage the day-to-day needs of a wide range of companion animals in different situations.

If you want to further your career working with, and managing, companion animals like dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, and birds, then this is the programme for you. Explore the basics of animal anatomy, welfare, behaviour and husbandry, learn how to recognise signs of good and poor health across a range of companion animals, and understand how to manage animals in a range of environments.

Develop an awareness of the social, ethical, and environmental issues that affect animal management through self-selected work placements, where you'll discover how to communicate effectively within a team and apply basic business and customer service skills in the work environment.

If you’re interested in continuing your studies, this programme will give you the academic admission requirements for higher-level animal programmes at Unitec, including the Bachelor of Applied Science (Animal Management and Welfare).

Please note: International students who graduate will NOT be eligible for a post-study work visa upon completion of this programme.

Students must have a minimum of 4 years secondary education, and a minimum of 12 NCEA credits at Level 1 in each of at least two subjects, OR a pass in two subjects in New Zealand School Certificate, OR Unitec Certificate in Foundation Studies: Whitinga (Level 2) in a relevant pathway, OR equivalent;

If you don’t meet the academic criteria above, we'll also accept the New Zealand Certificate in Animal Care (Level 3) or an equivalent qualification. We also have a range of Foundation and Bridging Education programmes which will help you prepare for further academic study.

English requirements

Have achieved NCEA Level 3 and New Zealand University Entrance

  • IELTS - An overall IELTS band score (Academic Format) of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL (pBT): Score of 530 (essay 4.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL (iBT): Score of 46 (writing 20)
  • First Certificate in English (FCE) with a pass at Grade C OR Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) with a score of 47 or higher under the Cambridge International standard tests of English as a foreign language
  • Pearson Test of English PToE (Academic) with a score of 42
  • City & Guilds Internal English for Speakers of Other Languages (IESOL) B2 Communicator with a score of 42

Have achieved at least one English proficiency outcome in the last two years
