Industrial Ecology is an interdisciplinary research field specialising in environmental sustainability. It is the study of the flow of materials and energy in industrial and consumer activities and the effects these flows have on the environment. It also considers the influences of economic, political, regulatory and social factors on the flow, use and transformation of resources.

Study Industrial Ecology

The international master in industrial ecology at NTNU offers an interdisciplinary approach to environmental sustainability.

You will learn to apply the analytical tools of Industrial Ecology to a wide range of environmental issues highly relevant for today’s society such as; energy, waste, biodiversity, resources and sustainable production and consumption.

You will gain understanding about environmental pressures and how to critically evaluate solutions. This knowledge is highly relevant for industry, policy and technology development.

Our work supports the global community to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, including co-authoring UN's climate reports. We also host NTNU Sustainability, one of four strategic research areas at NTNU.

You will learn holistic critical thinking methods, and have access to state-of-the-art analytical tools, to solve environmental problems. At the same time you will be in a city with a vibrant international student community.

NTNU offers Norway's only specialist master's degree programme in Industrial Ecology, and we established the world's first PhD in Industrial Ecology.

Through this master´s degree programme you will have developed unique competencies which are increasingly in demand both in the private and public sector. Your greatest advantage will be your ability to consider the big picture and analyze complicated systems, whilst keeping things in perspective.

During your project and thesis work you will cooperate with our network of contacts in research and academia, industry, and environmental protection.

Our degree prepares you for a career in environmental analysis and management in large international companies, as a sustainability specialist in regional and national governance institutions and companies, and in consultancies and research institutions in Norway and internationally.

Learning outcome


The industrial ecologist:

Has deep understanding of concepts of industrial ecology and environmental sustainability, and in particular climate change mitigation, and how to support transition to sustainability in the frame of the sustainable development goals (UN SDGs)
Has advanced knowledge of analytical approaches within the field of industrial ecology, including life cycle assessment and life cycle impact assessment, material flow analysis, and input-output analysis.
