Our BA Comparative Literatures and Cultures and Russian degree offers an unmatched opportunity to study international cultural production in depth and breadth, while also studying Russian, a language of strategic importance spoken by 145 million speakers across several countries and large diasporic communities.You will study the literatures and cultures of the world in comparative frameworks that draw on methodologies from textual, cultural, and visual studies, as well as from translation, philosophy, history, social science, and critical theory. Texts will be read in English translation.Core units in years one and two currently include What is Comparative Literature and How Do We Practise It?; Introduction to Visual Cultures; Popular Representation and Institutions of Culture; Migrations of Culture. Additionally, you will have a wide choice of optional units based in the culture of a single language or a combination of cultures. Teaching is informed by staff research interests, and you will be taught by experts in their fields.Furthermore, you will follow a structured language course in Russian, as well as explore the rich literature, cinema, history, thought, politics, religion, and visual culture of Russian-speaking countries and communities. You will spend your third year abroad in a Russian-speaking country, extending your language skills and cultural knowledge. Assessments may include presentations, essays, commentaries, exams, collaborative projects, debates, podcasts, video essays, and dissertations.This course encourages attributes highly valued by employers, including intercultural understanding, analytical and critical thinking, clarity and self confidence in communication, an aptitude for collaborative work, and creativity. It will instil the habits of curiosity, openness, rigour, self reflection and evidence-based thinking, preparing you for careers in a variety of sectors.All modern languages students have access to our state-of-the-art Multimedia Centre, with a collection of movies, a student cinema suite, an audio recording and video editing studio, a computer and language lab, and study areas. You can access extracurricular activities such as talks by visiting speakers, societies, language cafés, student newspapers, and talent shows.

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is for international students whose first language is not English. Run by our Centre for Academic Language and Development, the one-year programme will prepare you for the undergraduate degree of your choice through tailored English language and academic units. High school diploma: We will consider applicants with a high school diploma (or equivalent) with a GPA of 3.2 minimum (3.4 for competitive courses) and a total of three from the following list: New SAT (evidence-based reading and writing section only) with a minimum of 650; ACT with a minimum score of 24; Any AP subject(s) with a score of at least 4 (more commonly 5); A full-year honors-level course at B+ or a full-year college-level course at B+ or higher; each AP counts towards the three; acceptable examples would include three APs, or two APs and one SAT. Some courses require a specific test score: Any course asking for maths must have specifically AP Calculus BC at grade 5. Engineering courses accept either AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, both AP Physics C, AP Chemistry, or AP Computer Science tests to meet the subject requirement. AP and SAT results can be sent to Bristol via the College Board code 5371. High school diploma and foundation/bridging programme: Applicants who have completed the high school diploma combined with a successfully completed appropriate foundation/bridging programme will be considered for admission to our bachelor’s degree courses. Associate’s degree: An associate’s degree is acceptable for direct entry onto our bachelor’s degree courses. For courses with A-level requirements of A*A*A, a GPA of 3.4 or better is required; For courses with A-level requirements of A*AA, a GPA of 3.3 or better is required; For courses with A-level requirements of AAA, a GPA of 3.2 or better is required; For courses with A-level requirements of AAB, a GPA of 3.1 or better is required; For courses with A-level requirements of ABB, a GPA of 3.0 or better is required. IB Diploma or A-levels: Applicants with the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma or A-levels will be considered for direct admission to our bachelor’s degree courses; First year of university Applicants who have successfully completed the first year of a US university degree will be considered for admission to the first year of our bachelor’s degree courses; Students need to have IELTS 6.0 overall with either listening or speaking at 6.5, with no skill below 6.0.
