Birkbeck's BSc Environment and Sustainability gives you a deep understanding of what drives environmental change and how to manage natural systems under unprecedented pressure. Learning from internationally-recognised researchers, you will discover the core scientific principles you need to understand key environmental challenges, including climate change, pollution and waste management, biodiversity loss and biosecurity.You will become familiar with fundamental dimensions of environment and sustainability, including adaptation, mitigation and corporate responsibility. You will learn to collect, analyse and interpret environmental data to improve management practices.Core modules will give you a grounding in the ecological and social dimensions of environment and sustainability. You can tailor your degree by choosing option modules on themes like the global food crisis, nature conservation, hydrology, storms, flooding and sea-level rise, cities and urban inequalities, and geographic information science (GIS).You will benefit from our mix of classroom and field-based teaching, including a number of fieldwork opportunities that bring together students to build networks and develop important skills in data collection and analysis. You will develop the social and technical skills you need for both academic research and the modern workplace.**Highlights**- We offer a range of core modules in the ecological and social dimensions of environment and sustainability. You can also choose option modules on pressing themes like climate change, nature conservation, storms and flooding, and urban studies.- You will develop the social and technical skills you need for both academic research and the workplace, including data collection and analysis, and GIS.- We offer a range of local and international field trips, exploring a range of themes in human and physical geography.- Graduates in the BSc Environment and Sustainability find employment in local government, conservation agencies, businesses and environmental NGOs, working in areas like corporate responsibility and compliance, pollution and waste management.- The Managing Environments module enables you to apply for the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) Graduate membership. This is a requirement for many environmental management jobs.- Our campus in central London offers students the chance to explore one of the world’s great multicultural cities, and access to world-class libraries and institutions like the British Museum and the British Library.

Students are generally required to have: High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 PLUS one of the following: 2 or 3 AP (Advanced Placement) Examinations (Group A subjects) with grades of 4 or more AND 3 SAT Subject Tests with a minimum of 600 points each; for programmes with subject requirements, SAT Subject Tests should be in relevant subjects; Old SAT (Reasoning Test) with a combined score of 1,800/2,400 with 600 in each SAT section ; OR 2-3 APs (as above); for programmes with subject requirements, SAT Subject Tests should be in relevant subjects OR American College Testing (ACT) Programme with a composite score of at least 27 AND SAT Subject Tests OR APs (as above). An Associate Degree from a good institution with a GPA of at least 3.2/4.0 can be considered for entry onto a Bachelor’s degree. Please note that combinations of any of the above qualifications are also acceptable (e.g. an applicant with a HSGD, an SATR score of 1700 and two AP exams with appropriate scores for the course would meet minimum entry requirements).
