Migration studies is rapidly becoming its own field of academic study, but is, at the same time, suited to practical application. This Master's programme allows you to study international migration in an interdisciplinary way and in comparative context. A Master's in migration gives you the tools to get a job in this vibrant and fast-changing field.

Overview

The MA in International Migration programme is suitable both for individuals who are finishing university and for those who have worked for some years and are seeking a change in career. It is equally suitable for those of you who have already worked with migrants or refugees. Our students typically come from all three groups and from around the world; you will learn not only from your lecturers, but from each other as well.

Your classes will be taught by academics and practitioners. You will learn relevant concepts, legislation and theories surrounding human trafficking, but you will also hear from a humanitarian worker who has worked in the Greek islands and made an initial determination of whether a migrant may potentially be a victim of human trafficking.

Programme aims

This programme aims to:

provide you with a research-active learning environment which gives you a good grounding in the study of social science in general and migration in particular
offer a critical perspective of the interplay between migration and political, economic and social systems and processes
ensure that you acquire a solid understanding of methodologies for the study of social science in general, and in the application of those understandings to the study of migration in particular
ensure that you acquire a solid understanding of major theoretical approaches to migration, the historical development of contemporary migration, and the application of theoretical and historical knowledge to the analysis and understanding of contemporary issues and cases in the field
ensure that you acquire the necessary skills for advanced assessment of contemporary problems in migration and their solutions
develop your general research skills and personal skills (transferable skills).

Careers

The School of Politics and International Relations has a dedicated Employability, Placements and Internships Officer who works with students to develop work-based placements in a range of organisations. Centrally, the Careers and Employability Service can help you plan for your future by providing one-to-one advice at any stage of your postgraduate studies.

Many students at our Brussels centre who undertake internships are offered contracts in Brussels immediately after graduation. Our graduates have gone on to careers in academia, local and national government and public relations. Others have joined their home country’s diplomatic service, entered international organisations, or have chosen to undertake a ‘stage’ at the European Commission, or another EU institution.

For entry to a Kent postgraduate degree programme (Master’s), US students typically need to have completed a four-year undergraduate degree (Bachelor’s or First Professional degree) at an accredited university or college. Exact requirements will depend on the postgraduate degree you are applying for and the institution you have studied at. For programmes that require a 2:1 we usually ask for a final GPA of 3.2/4.0. Students from highly ranked institutions may be accepted with a GPA of 3.0/4.0. For programmes that require a 2:2 we usually ask for a final GPA of 3.0/4.0. Students from highly ranked institutions may be accepted with a GPA of 2.8/4.0. Some, but not all, postgraduate programmes require your undergraduate degree to have a related major. Some postgraduate programmes may require work experience in a relevant field or at a certain level. For MBA, Students who wish to apply for a higher degree should have a good honours degree from the UK (minimum 2:2) or equivalent internationally recognised qualification. Exceptions will be considered for senior managers with more than ten years’ managerial work experience. Students need to have an IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.0 in R&W; 5.5 in S&L).

Students should hold a bachelor degree for entry to this master's degree. We accept a wide range of subjects for entry and you do not need to have necessarily studied Political Science or law previously. Typical first degrees of our students include Economics, History, Classics, Languages, Philosophy, Geography & Psychology (among others). The standard of the degree will normally be at least an Upper Second Class Honours degree from countries such as the UK, Ghana, Nigeria or Kenya, or a minimum Grade Point Average of 3.0 under the American system from an accredited institution or equivalent. We do review candidates application on a case by case basis and extensive work experience may compensate for a slightly lower degree result. Students can apply before completion of the bachelor degree and if successful in obtaining a place, you would be made a conditional offer. All applicants are considered on an individual basis and additional qualifications, professional qualifications and relevant experience may also be taken into account when considering applications.
