Our BA Language and/with History with International Experience allows you to combine studying a modern language and its associated culture with a study of history. You will be taught by internationally renowned researchers, reflecting the latest trends in the study of history and cultural studies in modern languages. You will also have the opportunity to study a number of cross-cultural modules which will allow you to explore specific themes across a variety of language-speaking areas.The third year is normally spent abroad at a partner institution to allow you to develop your language skills and your knowledge of the culture of the language-speaking area you are studying.You can also apply for a three-year version of the course without a year abroad, and you will normally also be able to transfer to this version of the course during your first or second year of study if you decide you do not wish to study outside of the UK.This course is also available for part-time evening study over four years.**Highlights**- This course will enable you to reach a high level of fluency in your chosen language while also studying fascinating periods and areas of study, from human prehistory through to classical civilisation, the medieval and early modern periods, and on to twenty-first-century history, politics and international relations.- You will have the opportunity to spend a year abroad at a partner institution.- You will be taught by specialists from our Department of Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics, a centre of teaching and research excellence. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), Modern Languages and Linguistics achieved 100% for a research environment conducive to producing research of the highest quality.- Ours is a community of scholars with shared interests in interdisciplinary topics and cross-cultural research. Our affiliated research centres, the Centre for French, Francophone and Comparative Studies (CFFCS) and the Centre for Iberian and Latin American Visual Studies (CILAVS), provide an important platform for this exchange. We also convene, with other departments, the Eighteenth-Century Research Group.- Our Department of History, Classics and Archaeology is a world-renowned centre of original, influential research. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF), History at Birkbeck was ranked sixth in the UK for the percentage of our research deemed world-leading or internationally excellent. 94% of our eligible staff submitted research and we achieved 100% for a research environment supporting world-leading and internationally excellent research.**Careers and employability**Graduates can pursue career paths in research, education or journalism. Students are generally required to have: High School Diploma with a GPA of 3.0/4.0 PLUS one of the following: 2 or 3 AP (Advanced Placement) Examinations (Group A subjects) with grades of 4 or more AND 3 SAT Subject Tests with a minimum of 600 points each; for programmes with subject requirements, SAT Subject Tests should be in relevant subjects; Old SAT (Reasoning Test) with a combined score of 1,800/2,400 with 600 in each SAT section ; OR 2-3 APs (as above); for programmes with subject requirements, SAT Subject Tests should be in relevant subjects OR American College Testing (ACT) Programme with a composite score of at least 27 AND SAT Subject Tests OR APs (as above). An Associate Degree from a good institution with a GPA of at least 3.2/4.0 can be considered for entry onto a Bachelor’s degree. Please note that combinations of any of the above qualifications are also acceptable (e.g. an applicant with a HSGD, an SATR score of 1700 and two AP exams with appropriate scores for the course would meet minimum entry requirements).
