As a college and institution of higher learning, it is our mission to promote intellectual inquiry and effective civic engagement within the context of respect for diversity. Our ability to educate is one tool for making change in the world. We can demand change in our community, but first, we have to educate our community on why that change is necessary. In 2020, we launched our College Conversations series to highlight research by faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences that aligns with our initiatives to address racism and encourage diversity, equity, and inclusion in all its forms.
As we launch into another academic year, filled with both hope and uncertainty, we in the English department remain committed to fostering welcoming classrooms, respect for the dignity of our students, staff, and faculty, and an engaging community of research, teaching, scholarship, and creative achievement. UT’s undergraduate and graduate English classes are marked by the exchange of ideas and by an intimate process of learning. In our classrooms and through our research, we share our fascination with the history and production of great writing, participate in the exchange of ideas, and study the world-making contours of language itself.
