Central’s four-year advertising major lets you unleash your imagination. You’ll combine advertising, marketing and theory classes with hands-on experiences. Our student-centered faculty members are excited to share their professional and rich research experience with you, while they individually mentor you through the program. You can gain professional development during the annual National Student Advertising Competition and in paid positions at CM Life, the CMU student newspaper’s “best-in-the-nation” advertising/business department.

Advertising Major

An Advertising Major requires 39 hours of journalism and marketing coursework. The Journalism Department requires that ALL graduating seniors take an exit exam prior to graduation as part of the department’s assessment efforts.

At Central Michigan University, you will learn advertising skills to prepare you for your career. As you explore career options, consider these key features that distinguish CMU's advertising program:

  • Close coordination between journalism and marketing departments to assure a strong advertising program
  • Graphics lab with state-of-the-art computer equipment
  • Desktop publishing software
  • Active chapter of the American Advertising Federation, providing speakers, field trips and advertising experience

Areas of Specialization

With a background in advertising, you will find a variety of career options in the field.

Account Management Positions
The account executive supervises the work of others and seeks new accounts. An account executive works with the account manager and is the link between the agency and the client. An account executive also works with clients in managing their campaigns.

Creative Processes
In the creative aspect of advertising, there are copywriter and art director positions. The copywriter communicates to the consumer in the form of writing, and the art director communicates through illustration.

Media Positions
A media buyer advises the clients as to which type of media would be the most effective in their advertising campaign. A sales representative works for the media, tells media buyers of space and time costs for advertisements, and shares information on demographics.

Students must have attended all secondary and post-secondary institutions.

Uluslararası öğrenciler için

Students majoring in journalism (public relations concentration) must meet the criteria established by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. That means that they must take 72 semester credit hours of their degree work outside of the major. Students may take a maximum of 52 hours under the JRN designator. They must take liberal arts and sciences courses in compliance with CMU’s University Program requirements, listed under the University Program for the B.A., B.A.A., or B.S. degree.

Students are required to complete all secondary and post-secondary institutions.

They must demonstrate a proficiency in English by one of the following methods:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (minimum score of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, or 79 IBT)
  • International English Language Testing System (minimum score of 6.5)
  • Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (minimum score of 77)
  • Pearson Test of English (minimum score of 53)
  • ELS Language Center Program: Completion of Level 112

Students competing in intercollegiate athletics must submit a qualifying ACT or SAT score to meet NCAA eligibility requirements. Apply by May 15 if you are beginning classes in the fall semester. Apply by October 1 to begin classes in the spring semester.
