The curriculum in chemistry prepares students for graduate study in chemistry and related fields and for admission to schools of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. It prepares students to teach in secondary schools or to work in chemical and industrial laboratories and in related fields of business and industry. The department also offers required and elective courses in chemistry to students in other programs of study.
Chemistry is often referred to as the central science because it is fundamental to our world; playing a role in everyone’s lives and touching almost every aspect of our existence in some way. For example, chemistry helps us to meet elementary needs such as food, clothing, shelter, health, energy, clean air, and water. The application of chemistry to technology helps to enrich our quality of life in numerous ways by providing new solutions to problems in health, materials, and energy usage. Therefore, majoring in chemistry will provide students with knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes which are the underlying principles of numerous physical and biological phenomena as well as the physical universe that we live in.

Admission to a VCU undergraduate degree program requires graduation from a secondary school or the equivalent (lyceum, senior middle school, university preparatory school, completion of GCSE exams, Standard 12 graduation, etc.), which typically consists of at least 12 years beyond kindergarten.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): 70 IBT for undergraduates
