Mission

The mission of the University of Iowa Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program (AGNP-PC) is to educate nurses through didactic and clinical experiences to enable them to successfully enter into an adult/geriatric primary care practice. Currently AGNP-PC students at the University Of Iowa College Of Nursing receive didactic and clinical experiences that focus on care of adult and geriatric individuals which makes them eligible to be nationally board certified. University of Iowa DNP-AGNP-PC graduates are prepared to be leaders within the profession and U.S. health care system.

Program Design

Our Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) curriculum is designed to provide nurses doctorate graduate level education and clinical experience to become an Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner. Successful students will graduate with a DNP degree and be eligible to sit for the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or AANP Certification Exam. The program for BSN to DNP is four years. The post MSN to DNP AGNP-PC certification is two years. At Iowa we also offer a dual certification which graduates are able to be certified as an AGNP-PC and one other ARNP specialization. The dual certification is also four years.

Program Sequence

The University of Iowa College of Nursing’s Adult/Geriatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program from BSN to DNP will involve 4 years of intense academic study and clinical experience (see plan of study). The curriculum is designed to be completed in a four-year period, starting each August.

Students must have the following:

Baccalaureate or advanced degree in nursing

A minimum of a 3.0 grade point average. Note: the minimum GPA for the Dual Certification Programs is 3.5

Graduate from a CCNE or NLNAC accredited nursing program

Completion of prerequisite course by the start of the program:

An upper-level statistics course should be completed within five (5) years of the application deadline. Acceptable University of Iowa courses are as follows: STAT: 3510 (22S:101), PSQF: 4143 (07P:143), STAT: 4143, and (22S:102), or BIOS: 4120 (171:160). Equivalent courses from other colleges will be accepted as well. The course must be an undergraduate, upper-level (junior/senior) course.

English Language Requirements:

An IELTS (International English Language Testing System) total score of 7.0, with no sub score less than 6.0.

TOEFL score requirements with score of 81 or higher on the Internet-based version of the test (iBT) and newly admitted graduate students who present iBT scores below 100 on the PBT.

TOEFL score requirements with score of 550 on Paper-based test (PBT) and newly admitted graduate students who present TOEFL scores below 600 on the PBT.
