The Master of Arts in Sociology is primarily designed for students for whom the master’s is the final degree, but it also serves students who are preparing for a doctoral program.
The department offers a few different MA options. Students admitted to the PhD program that do not already have an MA, will earn one along the way. Undergraduate students majoring in sociology at the University of Cincinnati can apply to the BA/MA (4+1) program, which will let them earn a Master's in Sociology with one additional year of study. The department also offers a terminal one-year Master’s in Sociology.
Training and coursework reflects the department faculty’s interests in social inequality. More specifically, our faculty focuses on community and urban sociology, health and medicine, race and ethnicity, and gender and sexuality.
The MA program meets the needs of the State of Ohio and the tri-state region by training students for research positions in firms, hospitals, and government agencies, and preparing master’s students for PhD study. The department is committed to diversity, and draws students from around the U.S. and internationally. The department has a reputation for a friendly, collegial atmosphere and has an excellent placement record of graduates into appropriate employment or PhD programs.

For our graduate programs, we welcome applications from students who hold a baccalaureate degree (or higher) from a college or university regarded as standard by a regional or general accrediting agency, and have at least a B average in undergraduate course work (or otherwise give evidence of promise that is judged satisfactory by the admitting program and the Graduate School).
Standardized Tests of English Proficiency
Most students fulfill the English requirement by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Testing System (IELTS), or the PEARSON Test of English (PTE). For IELTS, an overall band score of 6.5 is sufficient for graduate admission. For PEARSON, a score of 47 is sufficient. TOEFL requirements vary based on the type of TOEFL test taken, and scores are valid for up to two years. The minimum university requirement is: 520 (paper-based test), or 190 (computer-based test), or 80 (internet-based test).
Application Deadlines: April 1, for fall enrollment.
