Northeast Asia is a region of enormous political, economic, and cultural significance. Containing the world’s second and third largest economies this dynamic region is in the midst of major transformations. As political, economic, and cultural developments in Northeast Asia have global implications, an understanding of the history of this region is of vital importance. Northeast Asian Studies offers a suite of courses covering the politics, histories, cultures, and societies of China, Korea, Japan, Mongolia and the Russian Far East. A Northeast Asian Studies major provides students with a solid foundation upon which to develop both general and specialist interests in a region of vital significance to Australia and the world.The Northeast Asian studies major is designed to complement the Chinese, Korean, and Japanese language majors and the Mongolian and Russian language minors, though knowledge of these languages is not required for courses in the Northeast Asian studies major.Learning OutcomesUnderstand and evaluate historical and current events and developments that have shaped Northeast Asia.Identify and critique the contemporary socio-cultural and political systems of Northeast Asia.Analyse current debates relating to regional cooperation and unity in the context of tensions in traditions.Analyse the global significance of events and developments in Northeast Asia.
