In an increasingly interconnected world, the ability to communicate across cultures is becoming ever more essential in the business, government and community sectors. Employers now actively seek professionals who can navigate cultural complexity, adapt communication to different contexts and build meaningful connections across borders. By combining language proficiency with intercultural understanding, modern language study can support careers spanning international business, diplomacy, education, media, policy and community engagement.
In the Modern Languages major, you’ll explore language as more than a system of words and grammar. Instead, you’ll examine how language shapes identity, power, culture and social interaction across global and local contexts. Alongside developing proficiency in one of five languages, you’ll investigate the political, social and technological forces influencing language use in contemporary societies. Distinct from traditional language majors grounded primarily in literary study, this major approaches language from an international studies perspective, preparing you to work across diverse cultures, institutions and industries.
