The Faculty of Agriculture at Dalhousie University (Truro Campus) offers a MSc in Agriculture and a PhD in Agricultural Sciences, in a broad range of specialties. The PhD program allows students to pursue advanced-level knowledge in agriculture and develop expert skills in their discipline of focus, while producing original, high-quality thesis-based research that will impact audiences ranging from international scholars to local farmers. Doctoral students will become independent, competent, critical thinkers who will be ready for a wide range of career options in academia, private industry, and government. Scholarships and other forms of financial support for students are available.

The PhD program in Agricultural Sciences through the Faculty of Agriculture is the first doctoral degree in Agricultural Sciences offered in Atlantic Canada. This thesis-based program will allow students to pursue advanced-level knowledge in agriculture and develop expert skills in their discipline of focus, while producing original, high-quality research that will impact audiences ranging from international scholars to local farmers. Through the PhD program in Agricultural Sciences, doctoral students will become independent, competent, critical thinkers who will be ready for a wide range of career options in academia, private industry, and government.

Students in the PhD in Agricultural Sciences program will join an intellectually and socially vibrant university community of professors, instructors, dedicated staff, undergraduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and fellow graduate students. Students enrolled in the program will conduct research in one of the following broad areas related to agriculture and food systems:

Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree which includes a significant, research-based thesis as part of the program. Alternatively, you may hold a non-thesis-based Master’s degree and present evidence of substantial, independent research experience, such as first-authored and peer-reviewed papers in the research literature. Applicants to have an average of least A-. Have a combined GPA of 3.70 or higher taking into account your Master’s degree and undergraduate coursework. English language requirement: Internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT): 100; IELTS: 7.5.

  • First-class thesis Master’s degree or its equivalent
  • Minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 (B average) in the last 60 credit hours of study
  • Degree granted by university of recognized standing
  • Most candidates for admission to a doctoral program possess a Master's Degree. Direct entry to some programs is possible for those with exceptional academic standing

English language requirement:

  • Internet-based TOEFL (Academic iBT): 92
  • MELAB: 85
  • IELTS: 7
  • CAEL: 70 with no band score lower than 60
  • Dalhousie College of Continuing Education (CCE): A-
  • Pearson English Test PTE Academic: overall score of 65 and nothing below 54

The application deadline for September admission is Apr 01, January admission is August 31 and May admission is December 31.
