The Political Science department offers two exciting paths to pursue graduate work: an M.A. degree, which can generally be completed in one calendar year (September to September) through the completion of courses and either a major research paper or a master's thesis and the M.A. internship option that combines the M.A. coursework with a 6-month paid internship and valuable hands-on work experience. The Department is committed to providing funding packages that match or beat those of other MA programs. All students in the M.A. program are given the opportunity to complete a major research project on a subject of their choice as part of their degree. The major paper, internship report, and thesis options offer students the opportunity to develop, organize and carry out a lengthy project that will further develop their research and writing skills. Both the major paper and thesis options culminate with an oral defence and thus provide students with an experience that will prepare them for oral presentations in a Ph.D. program, at law school, or in government.Students in the M.A. internship stream must complete an internship report, presented at a public event at the end of the fall semester following the conclusion of their internship. The format of the internship report follows those for the major paper and thesis options detailed below, but the length is shorter (approximately 25 pages), the focus must be related to a public policy issue, and the department's internship coordinator serves as an internal reader.
The normal basic requirement for admission to the M.A. program is an honours degree or combined honours degree in political science, or an honours degree in a related discipline, such as international relations or public administration, with a B+ (77.0%) or better average in undergraduate political science courses. Applicants must also submit with their application:two academic letters of reference which must come directly from the referees and will be sent each referee by a link as to how to upload the letters of reference to eGasNon-academic letters will not be reviewed and therefore will not be taken into consideration;an up-to-date resume or CV;a research proposal/statement of purpose/letter of intent (limit to one page, single spaced);a writing sample (e.g., a paper written for a course and seminar; please limit to no more than 10 pages if possible);and all post-secondary transcripts (unofficial transcripts can be uploaded to eGas as a PDF, however official transcripts will be required to be sent directly by schools in a sealed envelope, once you are admitted into our program; no other copies will be accepted). All required documentation listed above must be uploaded to eGas and must be a PDF file.
