Students in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science break problems into key elements, develop and use computer models for analysis, and find practical solutions. The program blends math and programming coursework with the liberal arts, providing both technical aptitude and strong people skills. This is a joint degree from the colleges of Engineering & Applied Science and Letters & Science with the advantages of a double major in a pre-planned, streamlined package. The combination of math and computer science is particularly valued in computational physics, computational biology, finance and data science, where complex problems need to be simulated and analyzed to make data-driven decisions.Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (AMCS) is a special degree intended to give students advanced knowledge and skill in the technical fields that require analytical math and computer science. It contains in-depth study in two colleges, yet the degree retains the flavor of a liberal arts degree through humanities and social science course requirements that go beyond the minimal required by the University’s general education requirements. The computer science course work will both strengthen the application of mathematics in problem solving and, in turn, be enhanced by the analytical skills acquired through the applied math course work.
