The Master of Arts (M.A.) in English at St. John’s offers broad and intensive engagement with literary, cultural, and writing studies. Distinguished faculty teach courses in traditional and emerging fields of literature, cultural studies, critical theory, writing, and composition studies. The 33-credit program features the option to write a three-credit master’s thesis in place of one course. In the final semester of course work, you submit a master’s portfolio, including one extensively revised paper and a 10-page critical overview of your growth as a reader, scholar, and writer.As a full-time student, you can complete the degree in three or four semesters. If you are a part-time student, you may proceed more gradually toward completing the requirements. The ability to think critically, write effectively, and engage with intellectual discourse will serve you well as both an academic and professional in a wide range of fields.

The requirements for admission to the M.A. program in English at St. Johns are as follows:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with at least 24 credits completed in English.
An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, and a 3.5 GPA in English courses.

Language Requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not attended a postsecondary institution in which English is the language of instruction must provide TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores for admission.

Applicants who have taken the SAT can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived

Applicants who have attended an American high school abroad or an American university can have the TOEFL/IELTS requirement waived

Applicants from the following countries do not need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score: American Samoa; Antigua and Barbuda; Australia; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Bermuda; Botswana; British Virgin Islands; Canada (except Quebec); Dominica; Eswatini; Gambia; Ghana; Grenada; Grand Cayman; Guyana; Ireland; Jamaica; Kenya; Lesotho; Liberia; Malawi; Mauritius; New Zealand; Nigeria; Papua New Guinea; Sierra Leone; Singapore; South Africa; St. Kitts and Nevis (St. Christopher); St. Lucia; St. Vincent and the Grenadines; Trinidad and Tobago; Turks and Caicos Isle; Uganda; United Kingdom; U.S. Pacific Trust; Zambia; and Zimbabwe. International students are encouraged to submit their application for admission and all required credentials by May 1 for fall semester admission and November 1 for spring semester admission.
