MS Degree ProgramProgram objectives are: (1) to recognize the diverse nature of subject matter embodied in the respective program disciplines (2) to understand the research findings and theoretical constructs undergirding the corresponding disciplines within the health studies umbrella, including the development of specialized skills needed for systematic inquiry (3) to understand the critical role of diversity in delivering inclusive health studies services (4) to develop effective leadership skills and (5) to understand and embrace ethical standards of the respective disciplines.A minimum of 30 hours is required for the major although respective concentrations may require additional credit hours.Program Research Core (6 hours):HMSE 7010 - Research Methods in Health Sciences Credit Hours: (3)andEDPR 7541 - Stat Meth App Ed I Credit Hours: (3) orEDPR 7561 - Qualitative Mthds Educ Credit Hours: (3) orPUBH 7150 - Biostatistical Methods I Credit Hours: (3)Concentration requirements:Health Promotion (21 hours):HPRO 7182 - Health Promotion Credit Hours: (3)HPRO 7183 - Lifestyle/Wellness/Disease Credit Hours: (3)HPRO 7710 - Prog/Event Planning for HPRO Credit Hours: (3)HPRO 7712 - Epidemiology Credit Hours: (3)HPRO 7722 - Hlth Intrvntn Thry/Apps Credit Hours: (3)HPRO 7780 - Health Counseling Credit Hours: (3)HPRO 7790 - Program Management in HPRO Credit Hours: (3)Guided electives selected with approval of the advisor:Health Promotion (no electives if Applied Project completed)Culminating Experience (3-6 hours)(Consult Graduate School Calendar for submission deadlines):Health Promotion:HPRO 7950 - Applied Project in HPRO Credit Hours: (1-6) orAdvisor-approved elective (3 credit hours)ANDWritten comprehensive examinationOther RequirementsSuccessful completion of a comprehensive examination is required.HPRO 7950 requires successful completion of a committee-approved applied project under the direction of the major professor that culminates in a formal write-up, presentation, and oral comprehensive exam covering the Health Studies core and required coursework in the HPRO concentration.The Advisor-Approved Elective option requires successful completion of both the advisor-approved course and a written comprehensive exam covering the Health Studies core and required coursework in the HPRO concentration.Consult the Graduation Information webpage on the Graduate School website for information pertaining to the submission of comprehensive exam results and when to ''Apply to Graduate'' in the MyMemphis Portal.Program Retention PolicyAll MS degree students are regularly monitored for completion of any entry-level deficiencies by graduate faculty.Program retention committees, comprised of selected graduate faculty within the corresponding programs of study, monitor the academic progress of all MS degree candidates in the respective programs. Each committee determines whether the student is making sufficient progress and, in case of deficiencies, may recommend additional work or the dismissal of the student from the program. For any student recommended for dismissal, an appeals process is available.

Baccalaureate Degree: The applicant must provide an official transcript showing that a bachelors degree was awarded by an accredited college or university. If you are a UofM undergraduate student applying to Graduate School at UofM, you do not need to request that an official transcript be sent to Graduate Admissions. This office has access to your transcript. In addition, transcripts from any other college or university attended may be requested. Only transcripts received directly from an issuing institution are considered official. Personal copies are not acceptable as official documents.

GPA: The applicant must have earned an acceptable grade point average, typically a minimum of 2.5 on a scale of 4.0, but departments may make exceptions for students whose overall GPA does not adequately reflect their ability to succeed in their chosen field.

English proficiency test scores accepted by the University:

  • Duolingo English Test-110 or higher on the overall score.
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) 550 or higher on the paper version, 80 or higher on the internet-based test
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System)- 6.5 or higher
  • PTE (Pearson Test of English) - 59 or higher
