Student life at Deakin University is an exciting blend of academic excellence, vibrant social communities, and comprehensive study support and resources. What makes Deakin special is its welcoming atmosphere and modern approach to education—something I truly love! Whether you’re on campus or studying online, you always feel valued, connected, and supported. The staff and lecturers are incredibly understanding, especially for first-year and international students adjusting to life away from home. They listen, offer guidance, and connect us with the right support to make the transition easier. Plus, the campuses are lively, with plenty of clubs, events, and networking opportunities, making it easy to meet new people and build lasting friendships. For new students, it’s important to take advantage of Deakin’s support services, from academic assistance to mental well-being programs. The student community is diverse, inclusive, and full of energy, ensuring there’s always something happening—whether it’s a sports competition, cultural festival, or study group meet-up.

I wish I was told that the timetable is flexible and can be adjusted based on your work timings. If you're a morning person you can choose to do classes early on the morning and if you like waking up late, afternoon classes are amazing. I wish I knew that building a good social network was just as important as studying. Sometimes, at the end of a long day, all you need is someone to have a chat with 😊

I wish I knew that university isn’t just about hitting the books, it’s a social playground waiting to be explored! If I could go back, I’d tell my freshman self to bring a backpack full of jokes and a radar for awesome people. Seriously, making friends and soaking up those epic campus moments is just as important as acing exams. Life’s too short to miss out on late-night chats and impromptu adventures with the coolest folks around!

Deakin offers several scholarships that recognise your academic merit and reduce financial burden. This was really crucial for me as I wanted to be financially independent. Deakin had a structured course plan for my degree and had amazing career prospects from the degree. The work integrated learning is the icing on top because it lets you gain a lot of practical experience. It has a very friendly environment. As an international student, I found it quite easy to transition because of the amount of support and warmth in the university. These are probably some of my top reasons as to why I chose Deakin.

I decided to study at Deakin because Deakin has so many specialised courses for environmental science students. Depending on what your specific interests are in the environmental sciences, Deakin will likely have a degree that can accomodate you. I personally really like the animal related scientific aspect of environmental science, which is why I chose to study a Bachelor of Zoology and Animal Science! However, I also really love conservation, so I chose to study conservation related units as my electives! If you're interested in the environmental sciences then I am happy to tell you what options are available! 😊

As a new international student at Deakin, you’re in a great environment to meet new people and find support. Here’s what I recommend: 1.Attend Orientation Events: Deakin holds a range of orientation activities designed to help you meet fellow students, both international and local. These events are a fun way to get familiar with the campus and make friends. 2. Join Clubs and Societies: Deakin University has a wide range of student clubs and societies. Whether you’re into sports, culture, or academic interests, there’s a club for you. Joining one is a fantastic way to meet like-minded people. 3.Attend Social Programs: The university runs various social programs, such as Deakin’s Walk n Talk program and Mind Matters Week, which are focused on student wellbeing. You’ll find these activities to be an excellent way to connect with others while also focusing on your mental health 4. Join the Faculty Mentor program: I cannot recommend it enough. The benefits of joining the mentor program and staying active helped me gain a community of friends and friendly faces on campus.

You will be enrolled in your respective faculty's peer mentoring service which runs from week 1-5. It's online and free. You get the opportunity to meet individuals studying similar courses. Every semester they also run Friday friends whereby, you get to have a coffee and chat session with fellow international students. And most certainly, the orientation week and DUSA events. Almost 10,000 people move about the campus, it will be almost certain that you'll meet your future best friend here. As for support services, we have got 10 free counselling sessions, subsidised gym membership, free of cost services at medical centre, student central for administrative issues, friendly academics, disability resource center, legal support from DUSA, survival kit from DUSA, just to list a few. There is plenty of support and students from over 164 countries, hence opportunities are endless. All you have to do is take the first step towards what you'd like to gain.

First, try to look what clubs are available at Deakin. Joining clubs will expose you to more people, and eventually get to know them and make friends with them. The best and easiest way is to join your country society at Deakin (if available). For example, I joined Indonesian Society when I just started my study, and that is how I am friends with my current friends. ☺️☺️

Its a space for new international students to meet new people and have some fun! I also suggest joining some clubs and societies. They are a really good opportunity to meet people with similar interests and get started on career networking. As for other types of support, Deakin offers free counselling and medical services for international students. DUSA also offers free financial and legal counselling. DUSA also offers free groceries on campus! As for academic support, I highly recommend the Students Helping Students program. They consist of student mentors across a range of faculties that can assist you throughout your university journey, whether thats adjusting to uni life, getting started on assignments, or making new friends.

We have got seminars for every unit. Unlike lectures, seminars have got fewer students and an experienced tutor to guide you through practical questions. I get an opportunity to go to work in a lab every week. I have cultured pneumonia worked with its antibiotics, did dissections, developed paracetamol, worked an amino acid test in commonly consumed food items. All of this in an amazing fully equipped lab with multiple demonstrators who guide you through your practical. This degree is equipped with work integrated learning (WIL) which means you ought to do an internship in order to graduate. Several of my seniors have gotten an opportunity to work with top cancer and embryology institutes. I am looking forward to it as well. This summarises my favourite things about my course.
