The PhD in Sociology strives to educate scholars with a breadth of knowledge of the discipline and specialized in-depth knowledge of particular fields within the discipline. In addition to the below program requirements, students must also complete a Professional Development requirement. This is a Full-time study program. Students will normally complete the required 500- and 600-level graded coursework within the first two academic terms and then take the additional two years to complete the Specialization Exam and Candidacy Exam. After successful completion of the Candidacy Exam, candidates then proceed to the completion of the degree, normally within two years, by conducting thesis research and related scholarly activity.

The minimum requirements are a master's degree with an average of 3.5 on all graduate courses and undergraduate coursework taken in the final two years (20 single-term courses) at the University of Alberta, or equivalent qualifications from a recognized institution.
