Cell and Developmental Biology graduate students work with internationally renowned mentors and are immersed in research at the cutting edge of basic and biomedical science. The Research Department of Cell and Developmental Biology has a long-standing tradition of answering fundamental questions in biology. We continue to maintain a question-driven approach to science, backed-up by the application of the very latest in research technologies. Our PhD students gain mechanistic insight into biological processes across scales, spanning from cells to tissues to whole organisms and from milliseconds to minutes to hundreds of millions of years. Research in the department therefore encompasses a wide spectrum of basic biomedical investigation, from animal development, stem cell biology, functional and evolutionary morphology, to neuroscience, organelle biology and cell signalling. The world-leading research groups of the department (Professor John O'Keefe was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine) study biological questions ranging from molecules to man, from Alzheimer's Disease to neuronal connectivity, and much more. The breadth and depth of research will give you an opportunity to investigate a wide range of fields.
