The BA History, Politics and International Relations Single Honours programme at DMU combines the study of modern and contemporary history, politics and international relations. The course has a global perspective, covering British, European, South Asian, African and North and South American history. It explores a wide range of themes, such as war and conflict, immigration, racism, nationalism, empire, colonialism and postcolonialism, policy making, local, national and international politics, political economy, history of photography, history of sport and leisure, environmental history, history of science and medicine, public history and heritage. The course is designed to meet national History Benchmark standards and is also informed by the research expertise of the History, Politics and International Relations staff. Students will acquire the subject knowledge, subject specific skills and transferable skills that will prepare them for further study and graduate employment. The course is designed to: examine the diverse forms of past human experience through the study of the history of particular periods, themes and areas from a global perspective; develop an understanding of the main theories and concepts from Politics and International Relations; develop a critical appreciation of the strengths and weaknesses of sources; explore the contested nature of history, politics and international relations as disciplines through an analysis of historiography; provide a learning environment in which students will be empowered to develop and enhance their abilities to think critically, analytically and creatively, and to work increasingly independently over the course of the degree; develop in students a progressive mastery of concepts and skills; provide research skills that prepare them for further postgraduate study in a wide range of subject areas; provide a learning environment in which students will be given the opportunity to develop and practice the skills and abilities appropriate to a humanities graduate and which are readily transferable to a wide variety of vocational areas; provide a learning environment in which the teaching is underpinned by the diverse research activity of the history, politics and IR staff This course offers the opportunity to demonstrate student’s achievement of learning outcomes via a range of appropriate assessment tasks including, but not limited to, essays, source analysis, oral presentations, group work, exams, portfolios and reports. The wide range of assessments will equip students with a variety of subject specific and transferable skills. As the student progresses through the years, the assessment will increase in length, duration or depth. By the end of level 6, students will produce a History, Politics or International Relations dissertation on the topic of their choice. Following DMU’s core principles, the course has been designed with equality and diversity principles in mind, ensuring that different types of learners have access to a variety of learning opportunities, modules and assessments. Specific training in employability skills is embedded throughout the curriculum to ensure the preparedness of our students for graduate employment.

If you hold an associate degree from a Community College you may be eligible for direct entry onto year 2 of our undergraduate courses. Our normal criteria is a GPA 3.0, plus you will need to submit a copy of your transcript so that course leaders can check the modules and syllabus match. IELTS 6.0 overall, with 5.5 in each band, or equivalent.
