PhD (Doctorate), normally of three years duration leading to a thesis of no more than 80,000 words and an oral examination. During their first two years in Modern Languages, PhD students would typically participate in the School’s in-house training programme as well as in the ''Observing teaching'' exercise in order to develop their teaching skills, to enhance their employability and to be better prepared for the life of a professional academic. It also provides the chance to contextualise your own language and culture much more broadly.In the School of Modern Languages, you will study alongside experts in the seven language subjects, as well as Comparative Literature, whose research stretches from the Middle Ages to the present day across a wide range of topics.
