At the UCL Centre for Translation Studies (CenTraS), we enjoy an international reputation for the quality of our research and teaching in a wide range of translation and interpreting-related subjects, as well as translation technology. In the first instance, candidates should establish a dialogue with a potential supervisor before making a formal application. Research proposals that engage with theoretical, linguistic, technical, and social aspects of translation and interpreting are welcomed. Examples of current research projects undertaken by PhD students in Translation Studies include the translation of humour in video games, the subtitling of gender stereotypes, translating British and American science fiction, exploring the notion of reflexivity in translation, and translating political speeches. Training courses are designed on an individual basis by the student's supervisor and generally involve participation in activities offered by the department of the primary supervisor. You will participate in a mandatory skills seminar programme and attend departmental seminar sessions which may be subject specific or interdisciplinary. This MPhil/PhD is for applicants interested in conducting multi-disciplinary research projects, who may have completed postgraduate training or study, who may have professional experience in translation or interpreting, and who want to develop advanced critical skills by working on sophisticated research methodologies. The course is particularly suitable for applicants with a background in languages, audio-visual translation, AI and translation technologies, translation theory and history, literary translation, and consecutive interpreting. It is also suitable for both recent Master's graduates as well as early or mid-career professionals.
