The Spanish major at Sacred Heart is designed to foster students' linguistic development and cultural understanding of Spanish, Latin American, and U.S. Latino cultures with an engaging curriculum focused on acquiring real-world skills and meaningful connections.

Regardless of your past experience or current ability, Sacred Heart University’s Bachelor of Arts in Spanish degree will develop your linguistic abilities, deepen your cultural understanding, and strengthen your critical thinking. The program offers engaging courses in literature, culture and civilization, film, special topics, and Spanish for the professions. Engaging courses emphasize communicative competence in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as the examination of the social, cultural, and historical context of Spain and Latin America.

Course Placement

Students who have any previous experience in Spanish (junior high school or high school study, study abroad, experience speaking the language with family, etc.) within the past five years will need to take a placement exam. Students with no prior experience in the Spanish language may register for a first-semester course.

What are my career options with a Spanish degree?

Many of our Spanish graduates obtain positions at various public school districts in southern Connecticut, including Bridgeport, Westport, Fairfield, and Newtown. A degree in Spanish will also enhance your prospects in many careers, including teaching, law, government, translation/interpretation, healthcare, business, insurance and more.

Students must have completed the equivalent of a United States secondary-school education (approximately twelve years of formal education) and have the appropriate diploma or satisfactory results on leaving examinations.

For all non-native English speakers, an official English language proficiency examination is required. The following examinations and minimum scores are accepted:
