Electrical engineering is a broad field, encompassing many diverse areas. The UCSB Electrical Engineering program emphasizes teaching and research in the areas of computers and digital systems; control systems; communications; computer engineering; device fabrication; electronics; electromagnetics; electro-optics; photonics devices; multimedia signal processing; VLSI design. Freshmen are introduced to computing methods and a foundation in building and designing circuits. Students are exposed to a balance of theory and principle and receive encouragement to pursue technical electives in signal processing, control systems, computer engineering, and electronics and photonics.
Research areas: Communications and signal processing; Wireless networks; Computing technology; Control systems; Systems biology; Robotics; Electronics and photonics; Semiconductor device structure and physics; Nanophotonics.
SUBJECTS & CAREERS
Electrical engineers work in a variety of fields that directly apply to our everyday lives. They develop new computer processors, work in optical communications, and study signal processing such as mobile internet technology. Electrical engineers often work with technology such as semiconductors, lighting systems and electronics, and in robotics hardware and software.
SENIOR YEAR PROJECTS
Electrical Engineering majors are required to complete a course sequence in their senior year, culminating in a Senior Capstone Project.
