Biology teachers pass on knowledge about living organisms to future generations and inspire us to appreciate life science as a discipline or possible career path. Some teachers are naturalists who create and lead workshops for young children at nature centers, while others are state licensed instructors serving as biology teachers at high schools across the nation. Students interested in secondary education in biology are encouraged to contact Kathy Christensen (kathyc@iastate.edu) in the School of Education for more information about teacher certification and endorsements. Below are sample 4-year plans for students interested in this path at the undergraduate level.

High school GPA requirement: Equivalent to a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. For more information on equivalency calculations. Core course requirements: Along with the GPA requirement, students must complete a minimum set of high school core courses, including four years of English (or their native language), three years of science with at least two years of laboratory science in biology, chemistry, and/or physics, three years of mathematics including algebra and geometry, and two years of social studies.
