The MS in Mechanical Engineering provides the technical depth and breadth required for engineers to lead organizations and develop impactful technical solutions in a wide range of industries, and/or to pursue advanced doctoral studies in engineering. Courses are selected by the student to meet their career objectives; seven must be within mechanical engineering and others can be within engineering, business, physical sciences or mathematics.
Degree Requirements
In addition to meeting the Lyle School of Engineering degree requirements for an M.S. degree, candidates are required to complete 10 graduate-level courses (30 credit hours) or eight courses (24 credit hours) and a master’s thesis (6 credit hours).
Students are required to select one of three areas of concentration: Design and Dynamic Systems and Controls; Mechanics, Materials, and Manufacturing; or Thermal and Fluid Sciences. Students take five courses within their concentration, including two core courses, and one course from each of the other areas. The remaining 9 credits can be satisfied by completing three graduate-level courses in the Lyle School of Engineering, Cox School of Business, or the Dedman School’s departments of Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Statistical Sciences or Mathematics.
The choice of courses must be approved by the academic graduate adviser. These requirements provide depth and breadth to the academic experience. Alternatively, the remaining 9 credits can be satisfied by completing one graduate-level course and a master’s thesis. The master’s thesis must attain a certain level of originality to be considered independent work and be presented to, and approved by, a committee with at least three members and chaired by the adviser.
