The Department of History offers an Accelerated Masters, Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy degrees with a major in History, and a certificate in Early Modern Studies. The graduate program emphasizes the development of critical habits and technical skills to foster advanced research, publication and teaching in the field of history, broadly conceived. Coursework nurtures these proficiencies as well as preparing students to deploy a range of theoretical frameworks to analyze materials from the past. Fields of study for students pursuing a degree in History are as follows: Asia (Masters only), Comparative/World History (Masters, PhD minor), Early Europe, Latin America, Middle East (Ph.D. only), Modern Europe, and United States History.
Degree Requirements
Minimum credits: 66
Core coursework: 695K Historiography is required for all students in the first year.
36 units of course work are required in major field; which courses qualify is determined by the student in consultation with their committee.
9 to 12 units of course work in minor field, also to be determined by the student and committee.
Language requirements: A reading knowledge of two second languages is required, except in United States History, where one language is required. The requirement must be completed BEFORE the written/oral comprehensive examination.
English proficiency is one of the conditions for admission for all applicants whose native language is not English.
Other requirements: Each student must pass written exams in major and minor fields, followed by an oral comprehensive exam. Following the completion of the dissertation, students must pass an oral defense of the project.
