PhD - Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology

Amerika Birleşik Devletleri

Ne öğreneceğim?

The department admits a small number of well-qualified candidates to its Ph.D. program each year. Successful applicants must in addition to University Requirements, submit current (within the last 5 years) GRE General Test scores, three letters of recommendation, two writing samples, and a letter of intent. The Sociology Department recommends applicants have 12 credit hours of advanced undergraduate sociology courses, including statistics and methods courses (or the equivalents). We also recommend college-level algebra or its equivalent. In addition, such factors such as the University's commitment to affirmative action, the applicant's non-academic experience, and the ability of the department to provide faculty guidance and courses in the applicant's areas of interest are considered.

The Ph.D. degree requires 48 credit hours of coursework and 18 credit hours of dissertation. Students must also pass comprehensive examinations and write and successfully defend a dissertation.

Areas for Graduate Specialization

Crime, Law, and Social Control

Our research area group provides sophisticated training and conducts cutting-edge research on the causes and consequences of crime, law and social control. With seven sociologically-oriented criminologists on our faculty, we are uniquely situated among programs to query the broad structural antecedents and dynamic social processes that undergird crime and justice.

Sociology of Health and Illness

Our Sociology of Health & Illness program for graduate students draws on our unique location in New Mexico to foster research that addresses the wide array of health care problems in the United States. New Mexico’s particular character presents distinct opportunities with regard to how we think about – and address – the relationship between health, illness, and social factors.

Race and Ethnicity

Race and Ethnicity comprise two of the most important forms of social differentiation in the United States society as well as in countries around the world. What is race? What is ethnicity? Students could well consider how their own embodied lifelong and cumulative experiences with race, racialization and academic training shape their conceptualizations and praxis (e.g., research, teaching and policy).

Social Movements

Our research area group on social movements includes multiple faculty studying U.S., Latin American, and transnational movements, within the context of the political sociology literature. We offer broad training for graduate students interested movements striving for political, cultural, and/or societal change, with particular depth in the role of culture (including religion) in motivating and sustaining collective action.
