Course overview In this course you join with an impactful Modern Languages department and undertake your own research project in Italian studies. Enjoy a full programme of research training. With an extensive range of specialisms, we'll support you to contribute original research to the field of Italian Studies. Course highlights The Department of Modern Languages is an interdisciplinary hub of research and we welcome research proposals that go beyond subject boundaries. You can be jointly supervised by an academic specialising in Italian Studies and another from a different discipline, depending on your research interests. Research a range of cultural, literary, historical, and socio-political topics related to periods from medieval to contemporary Italy. Our expertise includes literary studies, history of art, translation studies, sexuality and gender studies and cultural studies in the field of Italian studies. We're home to one of the UK's largest academic communities of researchers exploring the European national cultures. Conduct your PhD research from anywhere in the world through our online distance learning option.

If youre applying for a PhD , youll also need to hold a Masters qualification at Merit level or above (or its international equivalent), usually in a relevant area. Any academic and professional qualifications or relevant professional experience are normally taken into account, and in some cases, form an integral part of the entrance requirements. If youre applying for distance learning research programmes, youll also need to show that you have the time, commitment, facilities and experience to study by distance learning. You'll normally need to submit a research proposal. The word count is typically 1,000-1,500 words for Arts programmes and around 2,500 words for Law programmes.
