Our LLM Law General builds on the School of Law's experience in offering postgraduate legal education at master's level. It will provide you with substantive knowledge of a wide range of contemporary legal topics and introduce you to key critical legal theories and methodologies.

On the LLM Law General you will benefit from the use of sophisticated learning resources and the expert direction of high-level research academics. It is also designed to give you maximum flexibility in your choice of modules. Studying over one or two years, you will have an opportunity to tailor the course to your own professional or research interests. A personal supervisor will help you choose your best path through a wide range of options and provide you with support if you undertake a research dissertation option.

HIGHLIGHTS

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework we were ranked in the top 10 for research intensity in the UK and top three in London, while our research environment was judged conducive to producing research of the highest quality.

The school is the home of Birkbeck Law Press and publishes Law and Critique: The International Journal of Critical Legal Thought. You can also take advantage of the rich research collections nearby, including those of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, Senate House Library, the British Library of Political and Economic Science (LSE Library) and the British Library.

For entry onto a Master’s Degree, most US students would need to have completed a Bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.2 GPA (for courses requiring a 2:1); students from highly ranked institutions may also be considered with a GPA of 3.0/4.0. For courses requiring a 2:2, a GPA of 2.8 is required; The terms below are used to recognise students with particularly high GPAs: Cumulative GPA 3.9 (alternative name: Summa cum laude); Cumulative GPA 3.7 (alternative name: Magna cum laude); Cumulative GPA: 3.5 (alternative name: Cum laude). Applications are considered on an individual basis and students may be admitted to Master's programmes with a lower level degree if they have work experience relevant to the degree applied for.

A second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in law, the humanities or social sciences; other honours degrees will be considered. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, the requirement for this course is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. Standard requirement: TOEFL : 79 (reading: 18, writing: 23, listening: 19, speaking: 19).
