Mathematics - BSc (Hons)

University of Nottingham

**Course overview**\Are you fascinated by abstract concepts such as infinity and symmetry? Do you want to develop high-level skills in problem solving and analysis? Our accredited BSc Mathematics will give you these skills and more, preparing you to succeed as a professional mathematician. As you would expect, there is an emphasis on mathematical concepts - but with a practical application, too. We believe in collaboration and that’s why our students, industry professionals and alumni joined forces with our dedicated staff to design degrees suitable for the real world. Our co-created curriculum is redefining studying maths. You’ll learn from academics who are active researchers and whose work directly feeds into the course. We offer a range of specialised modules across all branches of mathematics – guided by [our diverse research interests](https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/mathematics/research/research.aspx "Research areas in mathematics"). Our academics are working on problems that span:* medicine, biotechnology and food security* epidemic modelling* fluid mechanics, with applications in industry and biology* statistical machine learning* algebra and number theory* mathematical financeYou’ll be based on our award-winning University Park Campus in the purpose-built Maths Building. In your first year, you’ll experience the different areas of mathematics on offer – from applied mathematics to pure mathematics, statistics and probability. In your second and third years, you’ll have the freedom to tailor your degree based on what you enjoy and would like to specialise in.Later topics include:* abstract mathematical structures* ordinary and partial differential equations* probabilistic and statistical models* mathematical finance* quantum mechanics and relativity**Putting your maths into practice**\There are lots of opportunities to apply your knowledge in a real-world context. Our classes are dynamic, interactive spaces. You’ll work both individually and together with other students to tackle complex problems from industry and academia, using advanced theories and techniques. Regular group work, presentations and projects will help you to develop a broad set of transferable skills, while computing assignments – including coding and simulations – will ensure you’re familiar with the latest tools used in industry. You could also broaden your career options further by learning a language alongside your main degree through the [Language Centre optional modules](https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/language-centre/modules-for-current-students/modules-for-current-students.aspx "Language learning opportunities").\\**Why choose this course?**\**Course highlights*** Opportunities to study abroad, complete an optional placement year in industry or gain hands-on experience through a research internship in the summer.* Get support on first-year topics from students in the years above through our award-winning Peer-Assisted Study Support (PASS) programme – and then become a PASS leader yourself.* Attend guest lectures, workshops and events run by our alumni, industry experts and our dedicated Faculty of Science careers team.**Proven results*** We’re a world top 100 and UK top 20 university (QS World University Rankings 2026).* 94.5% of School of Mathematical Sciences undergraduates secured graduate level employment, further study or both five years after graduation (LEO data from 2022/23 tax year, published in 2025).
