Programme overview

This programme is aimed at talented graduates seeking to develop or enhance their expertise in the fields of environmental policy, management, protection and advocacy.

It is led by the School of Geographical Sciences, the top-ranked geography department in the UK for research (Times Higher Education analysis of REF 2014) and a highly regarded centre for research and teaching in environmental processes, systems and the social sciences. Staff in the school have been directly involved in advising the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and regularly engage with policymakers, industry and non-profit organisations at local, national and international levels.

The programme is closely affiliated with the University's Cabot Institute, which promotes multidisciplinary research around global environmental change, and benefits from our location in the city of Bristol, the UK's first ever European Green Capital and a vibrant hub of environmental activism and technological innovation.

Through a demanding academic curriculum and practice-based learning opportunities, you will develop the skills and knowledge needed for employment in the public, private and non-profit sectors.

Careers

Our graduates have gone on to work in environmental consulting, the civil service, environmental management, conservation, marketing and communications, and a range of private companies in areas such as sustainable housing and energy.

To be considered for admission to a master's degree programme at the University of Bristol, the minimum requirement for entry is an undergraduate (bachelor’s) degree that is equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree (also known as a 2:1). A CGPA of 3.2 or above is considered equivalent to a UK upper second-class degree. Students need to have an IELTS 6.0 overall with either listening or speaking at 6.5, with no skill below 6.0.

Applicants must hold/achieve a minimum of an upper second-class honours degree with a final average of 65% or above (or international equivalent) in social sciences, physical sciences or humanities. Relevant professional experience or qualifications may also be considered as equivalent to the academic entry requirements given above and considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants from science/technical backgrounds must also demonstrate competency in essay writing skills, with at least 65% achieved in essay-based modules. IELTS: 6.5 with 6.5 in all skills; TOEFL iBT: 88 overall with R22, L21, S23, W22; Pearson PTE: 67 in all skills; Cambridge CAE: Grade C, or Level B2 with 176 in all skills; Cambridge CPE: Grade C, or Level C1; Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE) Level IV: with pass in all skills; Trinity Integrated Skills in English (ISE) Level III: with pass in all skills.
